At a time when war is once again becoming the language of politics and the collective imagination, criminologists Adolfo Ceretti and Roberto Cornelli offer a radical and unconventional reflection: is peace still conceivable, and under what conditions?

For the authors, peace is neither a naïve utopia nor a mere armistice, but a process of recognising limits: the limits of force, power, hatred and the claim to absolute truth. Only by acknowledging these limits, both individually and collectively, can conflicts be steered away from destruction and restored to a political dimension.

The book opens with Fragmentos, the counter-monument made in Bogotá by melting down the weapons handed over by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia after the 2016 peace agreement: not a celebratory monument, but a floor to walk on. Drawing on images and real-life cases, and weaving together philosophy, criminology, social theory and ethical-political thought, Ceretti and Cornelli offer a contribution to understanding the present and to reopening, with clarity, the space for a peace that is not rhetorical, but possible.

The authors will be in conversation with Paola Ziccone, Director of the Juvenile Justice Centre for Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige, and penal mediator.
